A good hotel with a few disappointments

BookDude on Nov 02, 2023

We stayed for five nights at this hotel, which we chose mainly for its proximity to the Metro and for its low parking rates ($5 per night as opposed to $35-40 per night at hotels nearer to central Washington, DC). The hotel was very clean and attractive, and the staff was very friendly. When we booked our room on the hotel’s web site several months in advance, we chose a King room with a sofa bed, with a Marriott senior discount. We also requested a room with a walk-in shower rather than a shower which required stepping into a bath tub. (We’re not handicapped, but we like the safety of a walk-in shower.) The confirmation which we printed after booking indicated that there would indeed be a sofa bed in the room. At check-in, I mentioned to the desk clerk that I had stayed at this location several years ago. "Well, " he said, "to welcome you back, we'd like to waive the fee for your first night of parking." It was a kind gesture, but when we checked out, the fee for all five nights was posted on our bill. It was disappointing to be told that a charge would be waived (small as it was) but then to discover that there was no follow-through to remove the charge from our bill. Entering our room, we discovered that there was no sofa bed, only an upholstered chair with an ottoman. We didn't want a sofa to sleep extra guests; we simply like having a sofa to sit and read at night. We also discovered that we were in a handicap-accessible room with a “roll-in” shower rather than a walk-in shower. It was fine, but we felt guilty being assigned a handicap room which could have been available to a truly handicapped guest. Does the hotel really have no regular king rooms with simple walk-in showers? The king bed was comfortable, with good pillows and linens, and the large flat-screen TV featured many channels. At check-in, we chose the option for housekeeping every OTHER day, but housekeeping made the bed and tidied up the room and bathroom EVERY day. It wasn’t necessary, as we tidy up our room and bathroom every day when we are traveling, but there was no reason to complain about it. The screened casement window in our room opened slightly, and we enjoyed leaving it open a few inches at night to enjoy the fresh air while we slept, since the weather was so mild, with no need for either heat or air conditioning. Our room overlooked the hotel’s front entrance and parking area, but we weren’t bothered by any noise. When I stayed at this hotel in 2009, there was an extensive, affordable breakfast buffet in a room just off the main lobby. I was disappointed to find that it no longer exists. We opted not to eat breakfast at the hotel's Bistro because we found the prices to be extraordinarily high. $9.50 for a bowl of oatmeal with berries is just too expensive, especially for retirees. Similarly, an “Eggs Your Way” breakfast of eggs, bacon/sausage, potatoes, and toast is way out of our range at a price of $14. For breakfast, we walked two minutes across the street to the Harris Teeter grocery store and bought freshly-baked croissants for $1.19 each. Using the in-room coffeemaker, we enjoyed breakfast for less than five dollars for the two of us, as opposed to nearly $30 for bacon-and-eggs at the hotel’s Bistro. Since many American hotels now offer a complimentary buffet breakfast to guests, I hope that the Courtyard Dunn-Loring will someday make one available, even for a nominal fee. On the plus side: we loved the underground parking garage for $5 per night, and we also loved the close proximity to the Metro (a walk of just about five minutes). The ride from the Dunn-Loring Metro station to the Smithsonian station on the National Mall was about 35 minutes. The Metro was so easy to use for traveling around Washington that we parked our car when we arrived at the hotel and never took it out until we left five days later. As retirees, we purchased Senior SmarTrip cards which greatly reduced the cost of our rides on the Metro. Our room rate changed from night to night, with a low of $169 to a high of $237, for an average of $205 per night, which we considered quite reasonable. With occupancy tax and county tax added, our entire bill for five nights came to $1182. William McLoughlin in Columbus, Ohio

I booked here with points for a week-long stay when I needed to visit due to the death of a loved one, and my time at the hotel was excellent. The hotel is well kept and appointed, and the staff was incredibly gracious and helpful, from the coffee bar attendants and housekeeping associates, to the night desk manager, who was patient and nice at checkout when I totally misremembered some room charges earlier in the week. The location is fantastic, near many restaurants and shops. I will definitely be back, and this hotel will be my go-to going forward.

Highly recommend for a safe, clean hotel while sightseeing in DC. Short walk to the Dunn Loring Metro station (orange line) and then about a 25 min Metro ride to the Smithsonian stop. Hotel was comfortable and clean. Staff was polite and helpful. Parking was great. Several restaurants and a grocery store (Harris Teeter) are within walking distance. The Mosaic district is a short drive with even more restaurants, a movie theater, Target, and more. I will stay here again on my next DC visit. We didn’t have to deal with DC traffic or overpriced hotel rates, this location had everything we needed.
